WALTER CATLETT, CO-SIGNED BY: HARRY BERESFORD Walter Catlett drew and dated this caricature of himself in a straw hat, plaid suit and his famous specs on one side of this album leaf in 1936, signing it with a rebus of his name and "The Best from Me to you". Signed on verso "Remember - the zoo is in desperate financial straits, but - Keep a stout heart!!!" on verso by character actor Harry Beresford. Inscribed sketch signed "To/LILY ALL/The Best from Me to you/says/Walter Catlett./'Banjo on/My Knee'/Oct. 4 -1936." in black ink and, on verso, "To Lily,/God bless her!/Remember - the zoo is in desperate/financial straits, but -/Keep a stout heart!!!/Harry Beresford" in blue ink. With caricature of Catlett signed with the partial rebus "W [cat]LETT". With pencil notations in upper left corner of Catlett's side. 5½x4½, with rounded corners on one side. CATLETT (1889-1960, born in San Francisco, California) is best-known for playing pompous and dithering (and spectacle-wearing) characters. He got his start in stock theatre in vaudeville in his native Frisco, moving up to Broadway in 1916, including the Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. shows Ziegfeld Follies of 1917 (1917, 111 performances) and Sally (1920-1922, 561 performances and 1923, 24 performances). He was hired for the 1924 silent film Second Youth (the first of almost 150 film and TV performances for him), but it took the advent of talkies before Hollywood could fully exploit his shtick. One memorable example was the screwball comedy Bringing Up Baby (1938). Catlett was hired for a bit part as Constable Slocum, but his performance was so funny that his part was expanded, and Howard Hawks kept him on to offer off-screen comedic advice to Katherine Hepburn.
